Just out this morning. The Quinnipiac Poll: Donald Trump has a commanding lead over his Republican rivals in his home state of New York. He has the support of 56 percent of likely GOP primary voters.
THAT’S FORMER CHANNEL 5 REPORTER/ANCHOR WENDY BELL getting the gate in Pittsburgh. Bell was the standout reporter for the Show Me 5 show 20 years ago. Since then, she’s been toiling at the Hearst station in Pittsburgh, WTAE. Recently, she posted a questionable comment on social media. The community went bonkers and her bosses caved into pressure and fired her. She’ll be fine. She has a hubby who makes big bucks as an interventional cardiologist. . .David Guerreiro, son of Wedgewood Partners’ Tony Guerreiro, is scoring accolades in the press in N.Y.C. and L.A., where he now lives. TOMORROW APRIL 1, 1976, STEVE JOBS, RONALD WAYNE and Stephen Wozniak founded Apple Computer.

  • D. J. Fone says:

So, Apple Computer was founded on April Fool’s Day, 1976? That would explain the first computer owner: Eve, in the Garden of Eden. She had an Apple in one hand, and Adam’s Wang in the other.

Re Wendy Bell’s firing from WTAE after 18 years and 21 regional Emmy Awards, from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

“After a mass shooting March 9 in Wilkinsburg in which police still have made no arrests, Ms. Bell wrote, in part, “You needn’t be a criminal profiler to draw a mental sketch of the killers who broke so many hearts two weeks ago Wednesday… they are young black men, likely in their teens or early 20s……They have multiple siblings from multiple fathers and their mothers work multiple jobs.”

She then wrote about a young African-American man, this one a worker she saw in a SouthSide Works restaurant. She said she called over the manager and praised the man, adding, “I wonder how long it had been since someone told him he was special.”

Here’s what I’m wondering: What if her “mental picture” proves correct, that the killers actually ARE “young black men, in their teens or early 20s, and they have multiple siblings from multiple fathers and their mothers work multiple jobs.”

Will WTAE apologize and bring her back?

  • Joe Hanon says:

Jerry, your blog today reminds me of your previous Post Dispatch days.
It’s excellent in its rapid fire, Walter Winchell-like bullets!
    Thanks for the memories !

  • Eagle says:

If Wendy Bell worked as a reporter, she deserved condemnation for her position on the shooting incident. If, on the other hand, she worked as a commentator, then she was on firmer ground although she was risking upset by the black community, which would be upset at the stereotyping. In either case, I would expect the GM to be pretty pissed off.

As to commending a black kid who was working as basically exceptional, that to displays a bias unacceptable in an on-air reporter. (If HF3 is a poster, he can elaborate further.)

It’s David “GUERRERIO,” not “Guerreiro.” Just saying.
