Cardinals Care

Best wishes for speedy recovery to John Watson, chief of staff for Governor Jay Nixon. Watson, a native of southeast Missouri’s bootheel, recently suffered what’s described as a mild stroke. Watson has been a key aide to Nixon for many years, first in the state attorney general’s office and later as “The Most Powerful Man Next To The Governor” for the entirety of Nixon’s administration. The abundant flow of good wishes for Watson had an undertow of tasteless speculation that Nixon’s policy director, Jeff Harris, is angling for Watson’s job. Down boy…  Democrat Nixon and Republican House Speaker Tim Jones have been publicly exulting about how well they have been communicating lately. Perhaps they need to step it up, and borrow President Barack Obama’s idea for a Beer Summit in the Governor’s Garden to get in the right mindset for a bit of deal-cutting. They could toast to great public policy being the best politics – but Jones still hates ObamaCare and once signed on to a lawsuit challenging the real locale for the Hawaiian-born prez’s nativity. So Mistah Speakah might not cotton to any more Obama-fied notions… Pressure is building on Republican state legislators to come up with a solution to help Missourians with health coverage, rather than just walking away if the officials end up rejecting calls to transform Medicaid to cover thousands of uninsured. The most potent backers of Medicaid in the conservative lawmakers’ world are the state and local chambers of commerce, voices of Main Street businesses who say their communities cannot risk cuts or losses in hospital and clinical services

Watch out for the backstabbing ways of Jeff Harris.

John Watson is one of the hardest working public servants most Missourians have never heard of. He does not seek the spotlight because that is the place for his boss. I am confident John will have a quick recovery and resume his duties at full capacity. Any suggestion otherwise is indeed tasteless. It is also insensitive to John and his family. Internal jockeying should cease N-O-W.

Margaret nailed it, watch out for the snake Jeff Harris. I worked on a 2008 statewide campaign and was exposed to how Harris cannot be trusted. He has screwed over so many Democrats back in Boone County that he can never run for any office and win in his hometown. He even lost his home county in 2008, which served him right.
