Cardinals Care

In a report last night on the Milwaukee archdiocesan bankruptcy, CNN’s Ted Rowland questioned whether New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan improperly moved $74 million to a fund for individual parishes there (to “shelter” it, according to one internal church memo). Months ago, lawyers for 570 alleged victims of Wisconsin predator priests leveled similar charges, accusing Dolan of illegally moving $55 million into a cemetery maintenance fund when he headed the archdiocese from 2002-2009. Rowland interviewed a now-retired archdiocesan vice chancellor, Fr. Jim Connell, who said the church needs action from the very top to come clean. The Cardinal, a Ballwin native, refused to be interviewed for the piece. And on Wednesday, Dolan was deposed in a civil abuse suit as he prepares to head to Rome to help elect the next pope.

  • Rich Krechel says:

It seems pretty obvious that this is exactly what Dolan did, and if so, he should be brought up on felony fraud charges just like anyone else would be. Of course anyone who dares to say this will be accused of being anti-Catholic.

  • KITTY says:

Perhaps he moved the funds out of the reach of predator blood sucking lawyers. I hope Cardinal Dolan is elected Pope.

  • Rich Krechel says:

Kitty seems to conveniently forget that no matter what his reasons were it was still illegal to move the funds to shelter them. These victims deserve much more than could ever be awarded to them and the guilty parties in the church should all have to face justice and prosecution. The church is not above the law. The fact that she thinks Dolan should be elevated to pope shows just how much she has her head buried in the sand and refuses to see. Also, Pope Benedict was the most guilty party of all in the massive coverup and he is getting off Scott free.

  • Judy Jones says:

Thankfully Cardinal Dolan was deposed for questioning under oath before he leaves for Rome. It is time for the full truth to be exposed and for law enforcement to investigate these sex crimes against kids, plus investigate those who shield and cover up these crimes. Until high ranking church officials spend some time behind bars, nothing will change within this secret archaic institution. As long as they can still get away with covering up sex crimes against innocent children, they have no reason to stop.

Children are safest when child predators and those who enable and conceal their crimes are held responsible.

The term is not “Scott free,” but scot-free. Sceot is the Old English for “a tax.” Scot and lot was a medieval muncipal tax levied on residents. Someone who managed to avoid paying this medieval tax got off “scot free.” Just saying.

The catholic church and the bishops should be tried under the RICO Act in America! They have acted as a criminal enterprise in hiding assets and hindering the arrest and prosecutions of multiple pedophile catholic priests! There is a huge gay blackmail scandal that is about to break at the Vatican and is the reason the Pope resigned! I am so glad that I’m an atheist and do not look to these priests and the catholic church for guidance! You have to wonder about the intellect of anyone that would belong to the vile catholic church! It cares more about it’s money and priests than it does the innocent children being raped by these sick monster priests!

This is off topic but buttinsky makes a good grammar-history point…If you remember “Capture the Flag” (back when it was a game played by youngsters, not a war) the term that sounded like “ollie-ollie-otsen-free” was the slang adaptation of “all you, all you, that’s out there are in free” Game won… I am of German descent, and we played it a lot and it taught sneaky tactics that the imagination could use to SURVIVE, just like kids should do in the real world. Today, I would assume, the game might be banned because it’s not “FAIR” to encourage individual thought and practice individual strategy…no, the Mother Government will do ALL your thinking for you…follow ORDERS…just sayin’.

  • Towncar07 says:

…amd make the ORDRRS to read REGULATIONS…there have been over 12,000 NEW regulations in effect since The Prince of Prevarication took office.

  • flyoverland says:

Town, at least our government is preserving our childhood game of “kick the can.”

  • Anonymous says:

There might be 4 million new regulations but not many people know of them nor do they follow them. A regulation is only as good as the guy regulating them. They ain’t regulating them very well these days. Just look at the immigration laws. If they really want to enforce the law, they would be going into the factories and fields and pulling out the illegals and sending them home.

  • Rich Krechel says:

Thanks Buttinsky for letting me know the true spelling and origin of the term scot free. I’m sure there are not many people who know that. We are never too old to learn something new.

  • Towncar07 says:

Flyoverland thanks for remembering “kick the can” I learned that well from my brother who used to kick my can regularly…but there was a method in his madness…as he also taught me the counter moves to someone who tries to kick [your] can…and it served me well when I was confronted once in the 60’s as a salesman for P&G and was accosted by two thugs outside a Brooklyn, IL grocery…there was blood spilled, but they ran with more wounds than me, and when I was [attempted] with a carjacking in ’97…it was no contest…thanks BRO…you are frail today, but I live on in your teachings. May I also credit the martial artist Chris Clugston for his fine instructions. For those that may care, I am at present age 72.
