A sold-out crowd of more than 400 supporters crowded the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center Saturday (Feb. 28) for the “Experience Karnaval” Gala and Auction benefiting Meds&Food for Kids, Inc. (MFK) the organization founded by Dr. Patricia Wolff to help solve the problem of malnutrition in Haiti. Co-chairs Dr. Peter Raven, emeritus director of the Missouri Botanical Garden, and Thad Simons, CEO of Novus, International, Inc. lauded the “social entrepreneur” efforts of MFK, which is building a new factory in Cap Haitien, Haiti, to increase its production of Medika Mamba — a medicinal peanut butter  — that treats malnutrition in young children.  MFK’s “Medika Mamba” already has saved the lives of 30,000 children, employs more than 30 Haitian workers in its current factory, and works with about 1,000 Haitian peanut farmers to increase the yield of Haitian peanuts, the main ingredient of Medika Mamba (“Peanut butter medicine” in Creole). The crowd of Karnaval revelers were welcomed by Sam Fiorello, Chief Operating Officer of the Danforth Center on behalf of Dr. William Danforth, one of the MFK gala’s sponsors. Former President Jimmy Carter, a well-known former peanut farmer, was honorary chair of the event.  The gala featured a silent auction of Haitian art, a dance performance by Haitian drummers and dancers, and a live “fund-a-need” auction helmed by Charlie Brennan of KMOX.
