Missouri’s wine industry is mourning the loss of a rising star whose academic expertise and big ideas held so much promise. Anthony Peccoux, an assistant professor at Mizzou, died in a one-car crash south of Columbia over the weekend. He was just 32. Peccoux arrived last spring in Columbia from France, where he earned his doctorate in plant physiology from the University of Bordeaux Segalen. He joined Mizzou’s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, and was leading its emerging viticulture program, including preparing a request for more than $5 million in federal funds to boost Missouri’s wine industry, the Columbia Daily Tribune reported. Ingolf Gruen, chairman of MU’s food science program, said Peccoux “had huge enthusiasm” and was “doing what our grape and wine industry wanted us to do, and what our college wanted us to do, and that is to reach out to researchers around the state to really get the grape and wine industry, what he liked to call, back to the good old times when the Missouri wine industry was renowned.” His exuberant and outgoing personality made him a media favorite, as Peccoux became the go-to expert for reporters on the effects of this summer’s drought on grape crops. Mizzou Chancellor Brady Deaton said: “Dr. Peccoux was an enthusiastic, respected and well-liked member of our university community although he had only been at MU for a short time. … He will be greatly missed by his MU colleagues and friends.”

I met this charming young professor at a wine event in Clayton earlier this year. He had brains, enthusiasm, energy and charisma, and he could have done much to promote the revival of Missouri’s long history of winemaking. The industry mourns his passing, so too should lovers of the grape.

One has to wonder if he was driving while drunk on the wine that he so loved?!

I suppose time will tell. And if it turns out he wasn’t driving under the influence, I’m sure you’ll readily acknowledge yourself to the insensitive asshat we all recognize you to be for going there.
