DR. KENNETH POLONSKY GETS PLAUDITS AT POURING BY WASHU MEDICS

Chairman of the department of medicine at Washington University and native South African, Dr. Kenneth Polonsky, was given a fond adieu by executives of BJC and the university at Monarch Restaurant & Southern Bistro on his appointment to the University of Chicago as dean of the Pritzker School of Medicine and the Division of Biological Sciences. Neurosurgeon Dr. Ralph Dacey and his wife, Corinne, welcomed the gathering to a sumptuous dinner prepared by star chef Josh Galliano, that included roasted red snapper, cilantro pea puree and glazed carrots, followed by Galliano’s signature flourless chocolate cake. Big boosters of the departing doc, Maryland Medical Group’s cardiologist/internist Dr. Gif Bowen and his wife Sally were on hand as was Dr. Larry Shapiro, dean of the school of medicine, who tipped that another building will go up on the campus to serve academic research. But, the biggest challenges facing the medical center, according to Shapiro, are “adapting to health care reform and meeting the budget reduction of the National Institute of Health’s support of our research.” Nearby, were Sally and Richard J. Liekweg, president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and group prez of BJC Healthcare Liekweg said, “Within the next 10 years, another hospital expansion will go up on the north campus and one will replace the building on the south campus.” Monarch’s owners Jeff Orbin and Aaron Teitelbaum were on hand to supervise the dinner. Teitelbaum’s love, Joanna Dettmann, popped in and got bon mots on her upcoming participation in a 7.5-mile Iron Man triathlon in Branson. “I don’t even travel that much,” joked Teitelbaum.

Aaron Teitelbaum, chef and partner at Herbie’s, was mum the other night about rumors, that he and his group will convert their successful Monarch Restaurant ‘s menu into all-creole fare. As for Herbie’s, the staff is now boasting about its all gluten-free menu
as well as the blue plate special offered between 5-6 p.m. . .St. Charles High alum Ryan Coyne will be on the card Saturday on HBO. Coyne is the three-time Golden Glove winner and undefeated in 14 fights. He played football at Mizzou for two years under Gary Pinkel and then turned to boxing. He graduated from Lindenwood University with a 3.5 GPA in political science and public management. . .There they were, dropping charisma all over the place. I mean “the birthday group,” who have been celebrating each other’s natal day for 30 years. This time it was at Frank & Helen’s Pizzeria. Through the years they have been supportive of each other and their families through illnesses, deaths and their newbies. The group is comprised of Joanne Campbell, Mary DeLong, Joanne Fehling, Sue Reid, Maggie Ryan, Mary Kaye Sullivan and Gina Murphey. Class? You bet. They always reserve a side table or booth to avoid annoying other diners. . . Plaudits for Sinatra song-stylist Mark Richman, who currently fills the bill at The Sands (nee Frailey’s sports bar) in Kenrick Plaza. The guy is getting standing ovations at a number of casinos where he performs. He does it his way and does it well.

Herbie’s on Euclid Avenue threw off a wow $4 million in revenue last year, confided bon vivant Aaron Teitelbaum, who is creating an empire of restaurants, beginning with the former Balaban’s and Monarch in Maplewood. “Next, will be a space in Clayton with 80 seats,” he said. Teitelbaum also tipped that he and Joanna Dettmann, founder of the search engine optimization firm Tsunela, just celebrated their one-year anniversary of bliss. While sipping coffee, he chatted about how he grew up at St. Vincent’s Orphanage and went on to become successful in co-founding Dimensional Fund Advisors and a think-tank with Crosby Kemper, III,. He said, “Our biggest issue is replacing the city earnings tax and the Missouri sales tax.” But, chess was uppermost in Rex’s mind, when he enthused the U.S. Championship will be held here in late April. He extolled the advantages of chess and how it contributes to mental activity – memorizing, planning and patience. Turning to world issues, Sinquefield opined, ” Iran will get a nuke unless Israel takes out the installations. They have no choice. I don’t see Obama standing up against them.” A graduate of St. Louis University and the University of Chicago, Singuefield joshed, “I told my youngest son, Luke, if you don’t finish college, you’ll become a failure like Bill Gates, Rush Limbaugh and Bobby Fisher.”
