Rumors that Dr. Henry Givens may step down as chief of Harris-Stowe State University were in abundance at the Missouri MLK Statewide Celebration Kick-Off Program the other night on the campus. However, Givens was in full command as an audience of 2,000 gave enthusastic hosanahs for the Rev. Al Sharpton. The civil rights leader, who filled his keynote with humor, biblical tales and blunt street-talk, was caught twittering in Givens’ office, while Cong. Lacy Clay, Jr. and Cong. Russ Carnahan chowed-down. KSDK, Channel 5′s most-watched education reporter and the station’s young, news/weather anchor Anthony Slaughter kept the program moving in a timely and pleasant pace. InBev AB’s John Furr and honorary chair of the event introduced Rev. Sharpton as “a transformational leader, a man who has challenged the American social and political establishment.”President Obama calls Rev. Sharpton ‘the voice of the voiceless and a champion for the downtrodden,” said Furr. Rev. Sharpton mused, “You know, it’s amazing how many people marched with Dr. King. They will tell you they marched with him and they are probably lying.” Sharpton began his ministry at the age of four. Others getting their time in the spotlight were Robin Wright-Jones, Tishaura Jones, Mayor Slay, Charlie Dooley and Percy Green, who was heckled by an attendee, who was ejected from the room. MIA was Gov. Jay Nixon, who only did a brief drive-by at a private pouring and then blew the Hood. On Sunday, just getting warmed-up from his Saturday night bombastic and poignant keynote, Rev. Sharpton accepted an invite to deliver a sermon to an SRO crowd at the Friendly Temple Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Drive. Faces in the crowd: the Rev. Earl Nance, Jr., James and Susan Buford, Merdean Gales, Ruth Smith, Gwen Packnett, Betty Thompson, Anita Banks, Frankie Muse Freeman, Stacy and Judge Jimmie Edwards, Judge Charles Shaw and wife, Kay, Argus publisher Yaphett El-Amin, Joe Keaveny and Lou Brock. AND MORE
St. Vincent Home for Children got a $45,000 boost the other night from donors at the Four Seasons Hotel. That’s where hosts Jeanne and Rex Sinquefeld, Rachel and Travis Brown of Pelopidas and Laura Slay of Slay and Associates plied hundreds of guests with a dinner and music by a Motown-sound band (Arvell & Company). Sinquefeld and his brother, Jerry, lived at St. Vincent in the 1950s, after their family fell on hard financial times following the death of their father. Rex said to guests, “This organization has an important job. And, with families struggling in a down economy, our task becomes even more urgent. The children who come through the center need every bit of tender loving care, and every second of recreational, social, emotional therapeutic and spiritual help we can give them.” Donors on hand included: Mayor Francis Slay; County Exec Charlie Dooley; Lt. Gov. Kinder; Vince Mannino of R.G.Construction and his wife, Patti; Charlie Brennan of KMOX; Diana Bourisaw of Midwest Charter Solutions; Mark Carlie of Stone Carlie & Co.; Dan Mehan of the Mo. Chamber of Commerce; Sam Fox of the Harbour Group and his wife, Marilyn; Lauren Herring of IMPACT Group; Bob Duffy of The St. Louis Beacon; Antonio Segovia of Monsanto and Guy McCormack of the University of Missouri-Columbia and his wife, Norma.
WORKING THE ROOM
Karen and John Temporiti were also among the holiday revelers, but Temporiti had some serious issues with which he expounded. He turned to a recent page-one story in the Post-Dispatch and opined, “It was a nothing story – even tracing my education at the seminary. The paper wanted to get (County Exec) Charlie Dooley. Obviously (operative) Jeff Roe is making inroads with the paper to support Dooley’s rival, Bill Corrigan. You know, even some of Corrigan’s colleagues at the Armstrong Teasdale law firm are supporting Dooley such as the upcoming fundraiser led by his partners Steve Cousins and John Nations.” Turning to another topic,Temporiti hailed that he’s helping Fred Weber, Inc.’s plan to expand its landfill in Maryland Heights. “Look, it’s the only one in St. Louis county,” he reasoned.
NOW, THEN
The office of Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan has begun asking local governments to quantify the economic consequences of a series of Rex Sinquefeld-sponsored petitions to abolish the earnings tax collected by St. Louis and Kansas City (and, beyond Rex’s current reach, by most major cities in the country.) In St. Louis , the earnings taxes paid by city residents and by others who work within the city limits amount to one-third of the entire city budget (or the cost of operating the entire police dept)… The two trains of Charlie Dooley, county exec and candidate, brushed each other on the tracks this week. While Dooley campaign exec John Temporiti was dousing Republican challenger Bill Corrigan‘s No-Tax announcement with proof of Dooley’s own tax-cutting chops, county officials were telling reporters that Dooley was supporting a half-cent sales tax increase for public transportation… Yes, that was former St. Louis mayor Clarence Harmon sitting back-to-back with former St. Louis mayor Vince Schoemehl over lunch at low-profile Beffa’s. Unrelated meetings and polite handshakes, reported bemused observers. Meanwhile, Fredbird – the unlikely club next door to St. Louis’s most hidden restaurant – will host a fundraiser Dec. 5 to promote the 2010 season of the Arch Rival Roller Girls… From my booth at the McDonald’s across the street from the Post-Dispatch, it looks like on-line editor Kurt Greenbaum (a true gentleman, by the way) has managed to do exactly what his bosses wanted him to do: get readers. A P-D story – more accurately, stories about the newspaper – spent the past week near the top of the Google International search list. Greenbaum, who oversees most of the paper’s social media efforts, drew worldwide attention for telling a local school that someone using its computers had posted and reposted a naughty comment on a P-D website… Erstwhile P-D commentary page editor Eric Mink was beckoned by The New York Times as freelancer to pen a review of a new production of “The Card Game” in the long-running “Frontline” documentary series on PBS. Published Nov. 23, the review is headlined “In Love with Credit, It’s Business as Usual”… Betsy Taylor, super-reporter in the Associated Press’s St. Louis bureau, is job hunting.
RAMS Heat-up St. Louis
A record 200 area volunteers, consisting of firefighters, civic and media celebrities joined Kim Slay, Robin Smith, Michelle and Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson and Mandy Murphey, and Charlie Dooley in hawking dough for energy assistance charity, Heat-Up St. Louis from both Rams and New Orlean Saints fans outside of the Edward Jones Domes, two hours before the game. They raised about $20,000 to help area needy with their heating bills. Allan Cohen, Donna and Dr. James Knight, Melanie DiLeo, Evening Whirl’s editor-in-chief Anthony Sanders and his lovely side-kick Nancy Sides were seen chatting up with the volunteers during a chilly mid-morning…

PEOPLE IN PLACES
Word’s out that Judge Larry Kendrick has decided to retire on Dec. 31. Kendrick has long been hounded by lawyers and the powers-to-be over slow-moving cases under his care. . .An area boost to our town will come Nov. 12-22 with the St. Louis International Film Festival. J. Kim Tucci, board chairman of the Cinema St. Louis, County Exec Charlie Dooley and Mayor Francis Slay announced the unspooling of “Up in the Air”; “An Education”; “Precious”; “The Young Victoria”; “Me and Orson Welles” and “Everybody’s Fine.” Ducats on sale Monday at the Hi-Pointe Theatre, Webster U. and WashU. . .Getting congrats from Pumpernickel’s Bonnie Silverman were insurance exec Jerome “Buddy” Diamond and Joan Kaner, who announced they are planning their wedding. . . Smithsonian Institution’s Scott Rosenfeld will lecture on “Lighting the Smithsonian’s Temple of Invention” at 5:30, Oct. 13 at the Missouri History Museum… Martin Duggan, outgoing host of KETC-TV, Channel 9′s “Donnybrook,” and one of our town’s favorite octogenarians, was honored Friday by the St. Louis Board of Aldermen with a resolution introduced by Aldermanic prez Lewis Reed, who was also being toasted on his 47th natal
day. Duggan brought down the house, when he asked the current alder-people from neighborhoods, where he and wife, May, had lived through the years. The audience howled with laughter, when Duggan told them he continues to oppose calls to reduce the size of the board, since “having so many of you always gave me something to talk about.” Duggan added that if any changes are in order, “they should expand the board’s membership.” His graceful exit from the chambers, with an assist by pals Lou Hamilton and former Mo. Sen. Harry Kennedy, was interrupted by a lengthy and obviously affectionate embrace from the dean of the board, Freeman Bosley, Sr., who greeted his “old and very dear friend Martin” to the open-mouthed amazement of his colleagues. . . Melissa Pluta of Edwardsville, Ill., was local winner in KPLR-TV, Channel 11′s America’s Next Top Model Casting Call. Tyra Banks chose her, along with six others, to receive honorable mention. Pluta recently signed with Centro Models STL/LA/NY.
LAW FIRM
A Saturday meeting at a Clayton law firm of some of St. Louis County executive Charlie Dooley‘s department directors and political people, reported exclusively by the Post-Dispatch’s well-connected Deb Peterson, was subsequently hotly denied by the participants. Affable county flack Mac Scott, who had originally acknowledged the meeting, backtracked to say that he had “gotten the dates mixed up.” So, what about a meeting of the same group at Gallup, Johnson & Neuman on August 22, 2009? Did that one happen?
