COPS & ROBBERS

In a letter to St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom, businessman Monte Franklin complained of the dilatory response by the police.

“Last evening around 6 p.m. a gun battle took place about a block from my house. I live near the corner of Park and California.  I heard at least twenty five shots.Shortly after the firing stopped, a man came walking down my driveway carrying an AK-47. He also had what looked like two 45 caliber semi-automatic guns in his waistband. This man walked cool and calmly. He looked up and saw my neighbors on their deck. He looked at them and placed his index finger to his lips as the sign to keep quiet. He proceeded to walk between our townhouses and proceed thru our front yard. I was about twelve feet from him. He walked across the street and proceeded southwards on California. He then disappeared in an alley, walking westward, with the AK-47 raised as if he was ready to shoot.During the time all of this happened, I was talking with 911 and gave the dispatcher a second by second description of what was taking place. I was very frightened. I described the man in great detail and what he was doing step by step. The dispatcher said she would immediately send the police. After about ten minutes I called 911 again, telling the dispatcher the police had yet to arrive. She said the police were on the scene at Hickory and Ohio – apparently where the gun battle took place – and were aware of the situation. I explained a heavily armed man was roaming nearby, walking calmly in broad daylight.During my second call to 911, I also told the dispatcher that a black BMW with Illinois tags had been circling the block with four mean looking men inside who were obviously looking for the man with the guns. I am certain they were involved in the gun battle. Finally, after about fifteen minutes, two squad cars came down the street and proceed to go south on California, even though the armed man had gone north onCalifornia. The cars were in no hurry. They did not have their lights or sirens on.A few minutes later another policeman came down Park Ave. I waived him down and told him was what happening. He asked for the description of the gunman as if he was unaware of what was going on. He slowly proceeded to turn north on California – not at all in a hurry – and kept going north. He did not turn into the alley where the gunman disappeared. By this time, at least twenty minutes had elapsed since my first call to 911.I am relating this information to you since I am sure you would not be pleased with the response time of your officers. A heavily armed and dangerous man was allowed to walk freely and calmly through our neighborhood with no sense of urgency. Nor was there a sense of urgency from the police who eventually arrived on the scene.Perhaps the slow response time was a fluke. If not, it appears something should be done to insure a fast response the next time a dangerous heavily armed gunman is walking casually around the neighborhood in broad daylight with no pause for concern.”

AGAINST VIOLENCE

City of St. Louis and county religious leaders, law enforcement types and community leaders helped bring new hope into 2010 by promoting safer streets throughout the region at the New Year’s Candlelight Services at St. Bethel Church of God in Christ in north St. Louis.  It’s become a tradition in keeping memories alive of homicide victims, while promoting the need to reduce criminal violence in the years to come.  Officials encouraged the audience participating in the Families Advocating Safe Streets project to teach children common sense, intervene when they are falling into the wrong crowd, provide a strong foundation and set a good example of outstanding citizenship.  On hand were St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom, Mayor Francis Slay, Jeanette Culpepper, founder of Families Advocating Safe Streets and St. Louis county Police Chief Tim Fitch.

ON TIGER WOODS

St. Louis county prosecuting attorney Bob McCulloch said, “The true tiger is coming out,” after Bob’s wife, Carolyn, shook her head and added, “It’s so sad.’  Of his future aspirations, McCulloch confided, “I’m waiting for (Senator) Claire McCaskill to run for president and I’ll follow her.” St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom had another take on Woods. “He’s a young man and some young men are like that.” Chief Isom was with his wife, Ginnie, a rep with Merck & Co.  Judee and Rich Sauget huddled with AmerenUE’s Richard Marks, chatting about energy and Rich noted, “We’re looking to do green energy projects along Route 3 in Sauget ( Illinois) and we’ll be able to sell energy to AmerenUE and others off the grid.”  Meanwhile, Civic Progress’ Tom Irwin lauded the upcoming opportunity to put in place light rail between St. Louis and Chicago. “The bill should come up within 60 days and it will cost between $8-$9 billion, he said. ” Chicago really wants it.” GOP’s Mo. Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder pointed out that he’ll run for governor and chuckled, “As President Obama goes, hopefully he’s helped our team a lot.”

MEANWHILE

St. Louis remains on the semi-final list of possible venues for World Cup soccer matches should the U.S. win its bid to host the globe’s most popular sporting event.  Convention and Visitors’ prez Kitty Ratcliff will be flying out of town in mid-November to attend a seminar for tournament host cities… Have you heard anything about singer Denise Thimes being detained by the cops?  According to her pals, she was dining at Culpepper’s in the CWE with friends.  She complained about something (nuts and bolts?)  in her friend’s meal.  The conversation with management went badly.  Police were called.  Chief Dan Isom, we’ve heard, interviewed to cool the situation down… For the “setting it straight dept”. KSDK, Channel 5 anchor/producer Art Holliday disputes an account here that his bosses sent him home to cool off  (and miss a consultant’s briefing attended by other members of the morning news team) following an off-air studio outburst about a reporting error.  Says Holliday (via Facebook) “I took a personal day to clear my head and de-stress.”  Would that be tomato or tomahto?

WITH THE GENDARMES

Police

Police

St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom said, ” I just might go as Michael Jackson to a masquerade party (on Halloween.)” Over lunch with his trusted chief of staff, Lt. Col. Tim Reagan, whom the chief credited for developing a strategy study with him. Isom said the results are yet to come. What does Isom think of the gay police officers associations in Los Angeles and New York City? “Tim and I have put in place a diversity council,” he said. “The women are comfortable with gay (police officers), but the men are skittish.”. Then, the conversation turned to some of the late police chiefs – Gene Camp and Bob Sheetz – who have left a gap in the skyline as their monuments. At a nearby table, Alexander Eisenbeis and Kamila Kowal hyped their boss, Jeff Stern, and their

The company is headquartered in our town.
