“GONE WITH THE WIND”; ENTER SALLY TIPPETT RAINS

The film rights for the movie version of the epic-romance drama of the Civil War era were snapped up by producer David O. Selznick for $50,000 from the book’s author, Margaret Mitchell.  It has been documented that more tickets were sold for the 1939 movie than any other in history. Olivia de Havilland is the the only living principal cast member. Since the film’s release, lines from the dialogue have frequently been quoted from: actress Thelma “Butterfly” McQueen‘s “I don’t know nothin’ ’bout birthin’ babies” to Clark Gable‘s “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”  Fans of the movie might give a damn ’bout our town’s Sally Tippett Rains, who has been so enchanted with the movie, that she has done something about it.  Not only has Sally written the book, “The Making of a Masterpiece, The True Story of Margaret Mitchell’s Classic Novel”, but she has also slated an exhibition, “Gone With The Wind: An American Icon,” bowing Oct. 15 and running through December at the St. Louis University Museum of Art. Furthermore, she has co-produced with Suzanne Corbett “Gateway to the Wind, a “Gone With The Wind” festival to be held at venues, including U.S. Grant Historical Site; White Haven and the Drury Inn Forest Park-St. Louis.  To top that, a “Gateway to the Wind” charity ball to benefit Rainbows for Kids will be held at Orlando Gardens on Watson Road, sponsored by American Airlines and Drury Hotels.  Belleville resident Greg Giese, who appeared in the movie, will participate as a featured speaker.
