NEW COMPLEX ON THE GROUNDS OF OLD ST. LUKE’S

Wonderful scene at Herbie’s Vintage ’72 last night. Great food and a smorgasbord of fascinating people there. Among them was Ryan Juneau, president of Baton Rouge-based Triomphe, a development firm. He explained his visit here was to scout the land behind the old St. Luke’s Hospital, 5535 Delmar Blvd., for construction of an office complex. The old St. Luke’s became a hospital in 1903 and subsequently became Regional Hospital, St. Louis ConnectCare and was shut down in 2002.  Lately, it became an urgent care center. Juneau’s target for the complex might work well given its proximity to the sterilized and endless BJC campuses that make you feel like you’re in an Antonioni film.

ON THE TOWN

With his wife Kitty, Hanford Gross, president of Gross Mechanical Contractors, Inc., told us of his close association with Conoco and added,  “They’re bringing pipelines to Conoco in Wood River, Ill., to bring in crude oil from Canada.for refining.”  The Grosses toasted their wedding anniversary at Herbie’s Vintage 72, while I learned that Roman Coppola, son of Francis Ford Coppola, while in town for the Film Festival, has since had a series of meetings with Jeff Orbin, one of the partners in the restaurant. That could be interpreted as discussing FC Reserve wine from the Coppola Vineyards or – perhaps a spinoff of the successful Herbie’s. The Rams runners aren’t the only ones retreating at the Jones Dome.  As any longtime female season ticket holder can tell you, high-stepping is required through puddles in the restrooms.  Seems leaking water from the toilets has been a chronic problem at the Dome for years, and one that has not improved despite a $30 million renovation.”By the second half, attendants are standing by with mops, but they can’t keep up,” said a Webster Groves woman who has held ducats since the team moved to St. Louis in 1995.  “It’s up to the point where you don’t dare drink that second soda or beer because it’s a nighmare to use the restrooms.”
