FATHER BIONDI’S IN STORE FOR PROTESTERS
The end of the school year can’t come quickly enough for St. Louis University’s Father Lawrence Biondi. Last week, one of his predecessors, the Rev. Daniel C. O’ Connell, was publicly named as having allegedly sexually violating a 20 year-old female student. Earlier this week, at a sidewalk news conference, SNAP “outed” two other former SLU staffers. who have been accused elsewhere of molesting numerous kids – Fathers Franklyn Becker and Edward Beutner, both of Wisconsin. And, now, students with several of the school’s activist organizations are planning a “counter commencement” event on Saturday, after graduation, in protest of the university administration’s decision to give an honorary degree to Pope Benedict‘s U.S. representative, Archbishop Pietro Sambi. Sambi was blasted in a Huffington Post piece last week for allegedly insulting a clergy sex abuse protester outside the papal nuncio in Washington, D.C.

One of the first people the columnist ran into in New York was a Fleishman-Hillard exec. Savvy Matthew Doering, senior veep and partner at F-H had just presented a lecture, “Join The Global Conversation,” to an August group that included execs with Huffington Post and Reuters. “We have the best global footprint around the world – above the upstart boutique companies,.” he said. Doering reminded the guests, that communication has “shifted from print sources to digital sources and social networks.” Among the firm’s clients are the government of Brazil, Yellow Pages Association, Bungi and Siemens. Toughest challenge? “Where there’s no free press, countries with great influence such as China and those in the middle-east have businesses that want to communicate with the U.S. It’s like trying for balance at the United Nations – all attempting to promote one message – what they have to offer.”
