KSDK’S ALERT

A flash flood warning on the electronic crawl (moving message at the bottom of the screen) on Channel 5 Tuesday night read, “remember, turn around and don’t drown.”  (Thanks , folks!)

JASMINE HUDA STANDING BY

Former KSDK, Channel 5 news reporter Jasmine Huda, whose contract, with a non-compete clause for six months, has joined KMOV, Channel 4, where she is serving as field producer. Her on-air chores begin on Aug. 1.  Good luck to another talented hometowner!  Meanwhile, KSDK has just renewed hottie Leisa Zigman‘s contract for another three years.  “I’m thrilled, that the station still wants this middle aged mom on TV,” said Zigman.  “My anchoring duties will increase and I’ll continue in my role as investigative reporter.”

A FLYING NUN AT THE JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER?

Future Olympians

The Dow Jones is still above 10,000 (Karl Marx would never have believed a “dove” market), the begonias are in full bloom, Albert Pujols remains our hero, seems like it will be Over There, Steve Shankman has become our Lawrence Welk and people even smile when they are asked to wait for a place to watch the Senior Olympics at the JCC. Joy, despair, hope and sometimes a tragedy happens there as it did the first year Nancy Weigley began as a volunteer at the SO, when a participant expired on the tennis courts. The columnist headed over to the campus of the JCC to ogle the action of some of the 1,400 from 18 states participate in 85 events. Sister Madonna Buder, 79, is flying in from

her base in Spokane, WA., to compete in cycling, swimming, iron man triathlon and running races (she insists she keeps in shape by running to mass). At 96 years-old, swimmer Bill Grant, may be the oldest in the SO. It was recalled that once a person lost his dentures in the pool; a young KSDK, Channel 5 news reporter, who poked fun at the older competitors, lost his trunks in the pool. A glorious event for all as spring melts into summer.

LEISA ZIGMAN vs. ANNE STEFFENS

Since KSDK’s savvy Leisa Zigman‘s opus on the Vianney Renewal Center for the treatment of priests, the St. Louis Archdiocese mouthpiece, Anne Steffens, has requested of the station’s news director Mike Shipley to send a different reporter in the future.  Steffens said she will no longer work with Zigman.  The uber professional Shipley declined Steffens’ request.

Just Sayin’

Did the producers of KSDK’s Just Sayin’ segment broadcast on Thursday night notice that one of the “people on the street” solicited for opinions on health care reform was (reportedly) recently wed St. Louis Comptroller Darlene Green.  (If they did, her title was not mentioned.)

DOUBLE-DIGIT RECESSION?

Juli Niemann with Carmello Gabriele at Il Bel Lago

So, it was shave, shower and shoot – the columnist’s new semi-automatic – at Bulls Eye Range on Manchester and then to Il Bel Lago for lunch with financial analyst Juli Niemann, who predicted “We’re looking at double-digit recession – and increasing – by summer or fall.”  As for foreclosures?  “We’ll see more foreclosures, because of the reset in adjustable mortgages,” she said. Despite the many bank woes, Niemann paid tribute to Commerce Banks, U.S. Banks and United Missouri Banks “because they didn’t do any of that lousy lending,” she pointed out. Niemann got kudos for her 20th anniversary as an analyst in the 12 noon block at KSDK, Channel 5.

CHANNEL 5 GETS HIGH-FIVE

(seated) Linda Renner and Lynn Beale (standing) Matt Renner and Paul Trelstad

At Chez Leon, Channel 5 GM Lynn Beale said that Channel 5 was “the sixth highest-rated Olympic station and the third highest-rated among the top 50 markets carrying the Jay Leno Show”, according to the Nielsen Survey. With Beale was her hub, Paul Trelstad and Linda and Matt Renner.  This table-hopper glad-handed ear-nose-throat specialist Dr. Barry Rosenblum and his wife, Dr. Lisa Oakley, a radiologist at MoBap Med Center, as well as Annie and Joe Schlafly, who were with

Also there were lawyer Jeff Gershman and his wife, Pru.  Over at Trattoria Marcella, Kelly and Shaun Hayes held forth at the “star table,” where he told the columnist his group will get full control of Truman Banks by month’s end. And a ritual for the columnist were brief stopovers at his favorite delis. At Protzel’s in Clayton, Max Protzel was baking handmade macaroons.

BREAKING NEWS

Having retired or otherwise misplaced many of its most recognizable and outspoken personalities, news honcho Mike Shipley informed his troops on Wednesday that KSDK, Channel 5 will begin promoting a new news segment this week that will tap outside talent to beef up its currently listless lineup of Lane-less, Foss-free news shows.  Beginning March 1, the station will actually start airing what Shipley calls “opinions”. . .during the news, but not as news” during the broadcasts.  Ironically, one of the earliest scheduled talents will be that of charmingly right-wing radio commentator (and former KMOV,
Channel 4 reporter/anchor) Jamie Allman.
