FACES IN PLACES
Aaron Teitelbaum, chef and partner at Herbie’s, was mum the other night about rumors, that he and his group will convert their successful Monarch Restaurant ‘s menu into all-creole fare. As for Herbie’s, the staff is now boasting about its all gluten-free menu
as well as the blue plate special offered between 5-6 p.m. . .St. Charles High alum Ryan Coyne will be on the card Saturday on HBO. Coyne is the three-time Golden Glove winner and undefeated in 14 fights. He played football at Mizzou for two years under Gary Pinkel and then turned to boxing. He graduated from Lindenwood University with a 3.5 GPA in political science and public management. . .There they were, dropping charisma all over the place. I mean “the birthday group,” who have been celebrating each other’s natal day for 30 years. This time it was at Frank & Helen’s Pizzeria. Through the years they have been supportive of each other and their families through illnesses, deaths and their newbies. The group is comprised of Joanne Campbell, Mary DeLong, Joanne Fehling, Sue Reid, Maggie Ryan, Mary Kaye Sullivan and Gina Murphey. Class? You bet. They always reserve a side table or booth to avoid annoying other diners. . . Plaudits for Sinatra song-stylist Mark Richman, who currently fills the bill at The Sands (nee Frailey’s sports bar) in Kenrick Plaza. The guy is getting standing ovations at a number of casinos where he performs. He does it his way and does it well.
POURING
At his 90th birthday party at Tony’s, attorney Thomas J. Guilfoil paid
tributes to the guests and his law partners and reminded everyone, “It takes a good English lawyer to know the law; it takes a good Irish lawyer to know the judge.” Surrounded by friends, Guilfoil was embraced by Mayor Francis Slay, who proclaimed that a board room in Room 201 will be hereafter named the Thomas J. Guilfoil room. Asked what if Paul McKee‘s NorthSide, $5.4 billion development of 500 acres fails to come to
fruition, Slay replied, “It would be marketed to developers each seeking say 30 or 40 acres, along with all the properties there the city owns. If it (NorthSide) doesn’t go, we can market it in a better way.” Slay brought down the house, when he recalled a member of the St. Louis School board, who put a curse on him. He said, “I got letters, a mass card from the Pink Sisters and a letter from a priest, that read, “If you believe in blessings, you’d better
believe in curses.” F.Y.I. Fresh out of law school, Hizzoner was hired by the Guilfoil, Petzall, Shoemake law office and remained there for 20 years. Partners Gerhardt Petzall with his wife, Barbara (a prof at Maryville) and Jim Shoemake, with his wife, Rita, were on hand. Jim said, that many years ago, Rita had been in Europe and shopped with one of the firm’s clients, Mark Tucker, owner of the Me, Too shoe distributors, when they ran into Sylvester Stallone, who grew up with Tucker. “Tucker asked Sly if he was also in the shoe business to which Stallone shot back, “No, I’m in fucking show-business,” quoted Shoemake. Former BJC urologist Dr. William Catalona of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, a client of Shoemake’s for many years, is now developing a “a more accurate alternative to the PSA exam”, offered Shoemake. Catalona is medical director of the Urological Research Foundation. A font of information, Shoemake is chairman of the board of Lindenwood University, which he hopes soon will become a class two college in the NIA. Another story unfolded about the time Guilfoil took newbie Slay to Chicago on Teamster’s Central States Pension Fund business (a client) and to meet with Allen Dorfman, who fronted the mob’s interests as head of the fund. “Walls were being torn away in the search for Jimmy Hoffa‘s body,” said Guilfoil. (Dorfman was mentored by Hoffa). “And a week after we met with Dorfman, he was murdered.” Petzall and Slay told of how they went to Ecuador to try a case for the late Joe Simpkins. Most of the lawyers only spoke Spanish, that was translated by interpreters. When the case moved to St. Louis, one of the lawyers said in his best Spanish dialect, “I’d like to go to Roxy’s (an east side haunt).” Also, on hand for the kudos were: Sherry Wibbenmeyer; Dianne Meyer; Victor Isart; Marisa and Pranee Nijaturus; Jeannie and Gen. Ken Lewi; Joyce Holson and Barbie Martin.
DATELINE – ST. CHARLES, MO.
Seeking the city that was and is, I walked around St. Charles this week. Mentally ticking off the highlights of the city, I found that money is tight, but somebody is hanging loose. There are walking banks – Jerry Scheidegger, Peter Bezemes, Paul Niedner, Elizabeth Rauch and Harlan Powell. There’s Tuners and Quintessential – two hot playpens “with a South Beach feel,” said Carol Felzien, a
supressagent with the city’s convention and visitors bureau, who lives in O’Fallon. A temporary ice skating rink will open in Frontier Park on Black Friday. “We’re no longer on the end of the Pony Express, informed Felzien, who boasted that Mayor Patti York stole the Missouri Municipal League convention from St. Louis.
And what a fine convention center the city has. St. Louis built one, so why? Donna Hafer owns the
revered Mother-In-Law Restaurant, where ghosts “have special privileges,” pointed out Hafer – even at the upcoming dinner, tagged “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Hohafer is a glamorous 74 year-old, who confessed she still works two shifts a day; washing the curtains and cleaning the 1866 building after hours. Her fiancee, 80 year-old Dave Thompson, enjoyed reminiscing over his many years as head engineer on the F-15 at McDonnell-Douglas. He recalled, “When an F-15 took off, J..S. McDonnell used to say, “Hear that? It’s the sound of freedom.” Frozen in time is the intruding Auto Zone sign on the fringes of Lindenwood University’s campus. But not so frozen is Lindenwood, which has recently completed or in the processs of building dorm structures, a rec center, an arts center and a new house for its president, the charming Jim Evans and his wife Lois. Just
minor complaints from students: “We have to take philosophy and religion courses and I need more education courses,” said Ashley Donaldson of Wentzville. Kim Jordan of Independence lamented, “There’s no wireless in the dorms.” Wireless aside, the futuristic Evans has long-range plans such as offering courses as a master’s degree in social work and a doctorate in business administration. Oddly enough, the school offers a four-year degree in fire science. “We have 3,800 residential students and 1,200 commuters,” said Evans. “Enrollment is up 10 percent over last year.” A former psychology professor, who has been with the university for 38 years, Evans admitted, “We’re looking for more professors in all areas. We like to keep class sizes as small as possible” He proudly boasted that the schools’ employees get salary raises each year. And, as fall ripples into winter and soon there went 2009. Still, no pennant for St. Louis, no Stupid Bowl and a shot at the Stanley Cup? Ah, but the St. Charles Rascals ball team continued to notch up an enviable record
