It was standing room only at William Woods University in Fulton for the screening of “Deadline In Disaster,” the acclaimed documentary film about how The Joplin Globe staff covered the devastating 2011 tornado while dealing with their own storm losses. The screening was arranged for the audience of several hundred by Mary Anne Beahon, director of University Relations at William Woods and an associate of the Missouri Press Association, which sponsored the film’s production. “Deadline In Disaster” will receive another public screening this week evening as part of the documentary series during the St. Louis International Film Festival. The screening is set for 6:30 p.m., Thursday at the Landmark Plaza Frontenac Cinema. Film producers Beth Pike, Scott Charton and Stephen Hudnell spent months interviewing Joplin Globe staffers and following them on assignments and in their personal lives. One-third of the newsroom staff lost their homes, and a news page designer was among more than 160 people killed in the EF-5 tornado, the deadliest in America since 1947. After the screening, Pike, Charton and Hudnell will be joined for audience q&a by MPA executive director Doug Crews and Globe reporter Emily Younker, who is among those profiled in the film. Screenings on public television are also in the works.
