2010 MID-AMERICA EMMYS
With a drastic vacancy in office buildings and emptiness in the hallways of hotels, the Renaissance Grand Hotel has been no exception other than Saturday night when the local Emmys took place. As for the hotel, let’s be reminded of Ogden Nash‘s line, “Progress was a good thing once but it went on too long.” There was no end of fascination during the presentations, although big names of news anchors, reporters, sports and weather on-air talent seem to be a thing of the past. Cable penetration, pubic TV, production houses, universities and online video websites have forced the competition and its out-of-town judges to use the same measuring stick against free commercial network affiliates, due in part to the recession or just the need for a full house. Conspicuously on hand for the event were KSDK’s Mike Bush and Fox2′s Mandy Murphey, but MIA were Larry Conners, Vickie Newton, Dave Murray, Russell Kinsaul, Leisa Zigman, Cindy Preszler and a few news reporters. But there were teams of talent from Springfield, Mo.,, Kansas City and Little Rock. Strange that the entire Channel 4 management and on-air team weren’t on hand, while the station’s promos tout, “We’re 4 St. Louis.” Presenter Patrick Clark, trimmed and slim, came in from L.A., carrying his guitar to the stage. WIL Radio’s deejay Cornbread grabbed an Emmy for Best Commentary/Editorial on KSDK and quipped, “I thank KSDK for giving a fat man a chance to express himself.” Shocker of the night: Channel 4′s David Souza, Jr., nabbed an Emmy, while he said of his missing female colleague, “I told her to keep her ass at home – there was no need to come.” Ted Koplar revealed that his World Events Productions will be back in 2011 with a global release of 26 new animated episodes of “Voltron” in partnership with Mattel Toys and a full-length theatrical movie of robotic action. Yesteryear chief of KPLR, Hal Protter, confided that he and CW Network in Burbank have parted ways. Protter joined Koplar to back-pat Spencer Koch’s marketing exec Suzi Schrappen, who was inducted to the 2010 Emmy Silver Circle. Not to be outdone by Oprah’s gifting audiences with exotic trips and cars, Schrappen got guffaws for having servers pass out hundreds of Fox2/KPLR 11 branded cookies during her presentation.
BROOK DUBMAN OF CAROL HOUSE ON A ROLL; PATRICK CLARK TO HEADLINE KPLR’s FOUR O’CLOCK NEWS
“We have broken ground on a new Carol House in Valley Park,” spewed Brook Dubman, bossman of the furniture and accessory giant “where you like nice things.” A familiar face on television via the company’s blitz of commercials, Dubman, with his wife,
Melissa, fawned over their children, Garrett, 5 and Eliana, 3, at the KPLR, Channel 11 fall preview launch party at Dierdorf & Hart’s Westport Plaza eatery. Beginning Sept. 20, the station’s Patrick Clark will headline a new 4 o’clock news block, that will feature the arts and entertainment, according to Channel 11 and KTVI FOX 2′s leader, Spencer Koch, who hails from Staten Island, and later recalled his five years as production assistant with the Mets. He turned to the print media and opined, “It’s going away with the era of tech. And now, you can read newspapers online with Google. Some day, you’ll have to pay for it.” Jenny and Rich Wolkowitz were on hand and got kudos on their 5-unit Car Credit City independent dealerships – “The largest in the area,” hyped Rich, who confirmed he’s given up political aspirations. As for buying time on KMOX radio for Cardinal baseball, Wolkowitz said, “It’s not my mix, but I do buy a great deal of advertising on cable.” Creative advertising maven Bob Kochan got backpats on landing the Pulaski Bank account and ad exec Ben Turec waxed on about his Golden Oak Lending and Casino Queen accounts. Kochan also mentioned, that his daughter, Emily, now serves Laclede’s Landing as exec director. Turec pointed out, that even KTRS, whose broadcasts of Cards games will end this year, did a salute that day to KMOX for snagging the rights. Then it was onward for rounds at Herbie’s Vintage ’72 for a chat with twosome David Charak and his steady, Diane Zebell, who lamented the passing of the popular Redel’s. Nearby were Nestle-Purina’s James Kristol and Matt Kurusz with Patty Abel, toasting Matt’s 27th birthday dinner, amiably served by Herbie’s star waiter, Charlie Manns.
KTVI-TV/KPLR-TV FLASH
Savvy television exec Spencer Koch (KTVI-TV/KPLR-TV) has begun beefing up KPLR, Channel 11′s fall programming by beckoning station regular Patrick Clark to helm a 4p.m. newscast, which will feature Clark – not only delivering the news of the day – but also making the rounds ’round town. Koch has also inked for the fall sked: 10 a.m airings of “Doctors”; 11 a.m. “Milliionare”; 2 p.m. “Housewives” and 6 p.m. “How I Met Your Mother.” Meanwhile, by popular demand, Koch has focused on junior football by slotting games on digital tv’s Channel. 11.2.
