BITES
The best restaurant in town is a good one in which you are known to the owner; the second best is the one that serves consistently good food whether the owner knows you or not. That’s Leon Birnbaum at his new Chez Leon in Clayton all over. Is it a religious experience? Hell no! We’ve all been bored in church, temple or mosque. There’s nothing to be boring about. The classic French cuisine bourgeois prepared by chef Colby Erhart or the lounge lizards, who swoon over the interiors, created by Birnbaum and Dan Byrne. “It’s Selkirk chic!,” exclaimed hair stylist-to-the-stars Randall Jones of Larz Salon to his best pal, the stunning Elizabeth Danforth Sankey, heiress to Bill Danforth. “Yes, more urbane than urbane,” added Sanky. She informed the columnist that she and Elizabeth “Lydie” Wallace have bowed an estate jewelry buying and selling firm, Elizabeth’s Estate. A few tongues wagged about Trudy Busch‘s 84th birthday on the day before and that she was much too ill to celebrate. Here ‘n there were Linda and Tony Karakas with Janet and Smith McGehee, who celebrated the birth of triplet grandchildren. Genya and Jim Human, along with Steve Anstey, were there praising the sales at the Janet McAfee real estate office. . .
Downtown at Tony’s, Kelly and Blues CEO Peter McLoughlin were bullish about the team and he lamented, “I wish Dave Checketts had bought the Rams.” Bryan Cave mouthpiece Harold Blatt with his charming Elaine graced a table with Marilyn and Bernard “Bunny” Edison, whose family empire, Edison Bros. Shoes, collapsed under the stewardship of Andy Newman and Martin Sneider, who had been teaching essentials of retailing at WashU (go figure!). Also at Tony’s, barrister Gerard Carmody and his wife, Susan, with their daughter Ryann, settled down after a retreat at the Four Seasons with his law firm, Carmody MacDonald. . .
Over at Beffa’s there was celebration over the upcoming nupts of Rachel Crocker (Eureka, Mo.’s Byrnes Hills Stables, LLC) and Robert Brake (Brake Landscaping and Lawncare, Inc.) with his uncle, former cop Ed Beffa. . .
And, at the Palladium party house on Fourteenth Street and Park Avenue, a sumptuous feedbag and cocktails were underway, when the columnist arrived to join in the launching of the EcoLifeSTL.com website and the honors awards presented to the City of St. Louis, AmerenUE’s PurePower and Sustainable St. Louis. They were chosen for significant contributions they make to promote and encourage Green living in the region. Said Mayor Francis Slay, “The greatest way to recycle in St. Louis is to save historic buildings like the one we’re in tonight. The Greenest building is one that already exists and also preserves history.” Cindy Bambini accepted the award on behalf of PurePower,AmerenUE’s voluntary renewable energy program, and she noted, “Currently, there are 6,000 residential and 200 businesses PurePower customers receiving 100 percent of their energy from the five wind farms in our area.” Emmis Broadcasting’s John Beck was front ‘n center getting plaudits on the broadcast chain of stations involvement in promoting the program. John Weber of Wells Fargo and his soon-to-marry Jennie Logan of KPNT, The Point radio station, chain smoked as Weber joshed about energy, “Before we left the house, I turned on all the lights, left the fridge door open, turned up the heat and turned on the microwave.”

WITH THE POLICE COMMISSION: St. Louis police commissioner Vince Bommarito, owner of the award-winning Tony’s restaurant downtown and shoo-in candidate for Best Uncle of the Year, now has a public relations agent to deal with the simmering (and sauteing?) controversy swirling around his Mardi Gras Get Our of Jail Free call to a St. Louis police supervisor. Savvy Peggy Lents, who also reps the Missouri Botanical Garden, is now speaking for him.

TONY’S RESTAURANT IS THERE TO STAY
While time and people may pass and fashions may change, the tables are always set at the venerable Tony’s. So it came as a shock to hear that the Bommarito family’s highly-touted restaurant may move to Clayton from downtown St. Louis. Not so fast! Scotch those rumors! As of Wednesday, Vince Bommarito, Sr., called a halt to negotiations with the management of the rising Centene Building in Clayton. Asked about the matter, Vince, Sr., would only confirm that it would have been a second location, “but the number didn’t work.” The cost of construction and common space costs would have made it difficult, offered a source close to the confab. Meanwhile, Vince and his sons turned to putting final touches on the menu for Sunday night, Feb. 14, when Tony’s will swing open the doors.
THE CLOWN PRINCE OF BASKETBALL
Basketball Hall of Famer Meadowlark Lemon strode to his seat at Tony’s spry as a teenager with unquenchable enthusiasm and at peace with the world. He spoke eloquently of his 22 years with the Harlem Globetrotters and of the year he shared a room with teammate Bob Gibson before Gibson turned to baseball. Lemon, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, spoke of the mysterious amalgam that keeps him going at 77. “At 4:45 this morning, I worked out at the Jewish Community Center in Scottsdale,” he said. The conversation turned to another athlete – Tiger Woods – and his recent misfortunes. He opined, “When Tiger and his wife’s moms were in the house, one of them should have done what (Olympic Gold Medalist) Charles Barkley‘s mom did. She would smack him against the head.” Then, Lemon’s host Tom Spitzer added, “Any man, who says ‘I’m just human’ is guilty. An NBA analyst said Tiger will lose millions at venues, but he doesn’t care.” Spitzer is the affable former sports agent, who with Rich Sauget, owns the Gateway Grizzlies. On his opinion of President Obama, Lemon softly confided, “He’s good, but he’s surrounded by strange people. They’ll eventually be weeded out.” Pleasant, gracious and relaxed , Lemon turned to his Lemon Ministries in Scottsdale, where he serves as minister He preaches, “It’s all about joy. Avoid happiness. Happiness is a whimp. When adversity comes in, happiness disappears. Joy comes from deep within the belly.” Lemon was in town for the Albert Pujols fundraiser Saturday night and was joined over dinner by Howard Mallott, retired bossman of Schneithorst’s.
POURING
At his 90th birthday party at Tony’s, attorney Thomas J. Guilfoil paid
tributes to the guests and his law partners and reminded everyone, “It takes a good English lawyer to know the law; it takes a good Irish lawyer to know the judge.” Surrounded by friends, Guilfoil was embraced by Mayor Francis Slay, who proclaimed that a board room in Room 201 will be hereafter named the Thomas J. Guilfoil room. Asked what if Paul McKee‘s NorthSide, $5.4 billion development of 500 acres fails to come to
fruition, Slay replied, “It would be marketed to developers each seeking say 30 or 40 acres, along with all the properties there the city owns. If it (NorthSide) doesn’t go, we can market it in a better way.” Slay brought down the house, when he recalled a member of the St. Louis School board, who put a curse on him. He said, “I got letters, a mass card from the Pink Sisters and a letter from a priest, that read, “If you believe in blessings, you’d better
believe in curses.” F.Y.I. Fresh out of law school, Hizzoner was hired by the Guilfoil, Petzall, Shoemake law office and remained there for 20 years. Partners Gerhardt Petzall with his wife, Barbara (a prof at Maryville) and Jim Shoemake, with his wife, Rita, were on hand. Jim said, that many years ago, Rita had been in Europe and shopped with one of the firm’s clients, Mark Tucker, owner of the Me, Too shoe distributors, when they ran into Sylvester Stallone, who grew up with Tucker. “Tucker asked Sly if he was also in the shoe business to which Stallone shot back, “No, I’m in fucking show-business,” quoted Shoemake. Former BJC urologist Dr. William Catalona of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, a client of Shoemake’s for many years, is now developing a “a more accurate alternative to the PSA exam”, offered Shoemake. Catalona is medical director of the Urological Research Foundation. A font of information, Shoemake is chairman of the board of Lindenwood University, which he hopes soon will become a class two college in the NIA. Another story unfolded about the time Guilfoil took newbie Slay to Chicago on Teamster’s Central States Pension Fund business (a client) and to meet with Allen Dorfman, who fronted the mob’s interests as head of the fund. “Walls were being torn away in the search for Jimmy Hoffa‘s body,” said Guilfoil. (Dorfman was mentored by Hoffa). “And a week after we met with Dorfman, he was murdered.” Petzall and Slay told of how they went to Ecuador to try a case for the late Joe Simpkins. Most of the lawyers only spoke Spanish, that was translated by interpreters. When the case moved to St. Louis, one of the lawyers said in his best Spanish dialect, “I’d like to go to Roxy’s (an east side haunt).” Also, on hand for the kudos were: Sherry Wibbenmeyer; Dianne Meyer; Victor Isart; Marisa and Pranee Nijaturus; Jeannie and Gen. Ken Lewi; Joyce Holson and Barbie Martin.

NOTES ON MY CUFF
Comedian Andy Gross and his wife, April Bartlett – both hometowners transplanted in Santa Monica, are swelling with pride these days. Their 9 year-old daughter, Morgan Lily, has hit the big time with Sony’s most recent disaster film, “2012.” She is cast in the Roland Emmerich movie, which is slated to unspool worldwide on Nov. 13 (and, eventually, here) . And, Bill Durham, the savvy ad guy who put Jack Daniels back on the map at his Simmons/Durham (later sold to Arnold) ad shop is tirelessly helping wounded vets coming back from Iraq through APA and the American Family Network. What do vets need? Jobs, mostly “Youth ask us to help find jobs and it’s amazing what they don’t know,” he said . De La Salle Middle School, a small faith-based school in north St. Louis’s historic Ville neighborhood, sends most of its students to local high schools and boasts a graduation rate for them of 96 percent. Looks as though Zoe Houk Robinson is headed for a pock-faced rice throw. The owner of Il Frateli and BoBo’s Noodles will marry her more than decade-long beau, Dean Pidgeon, topper of Pinnacle Corp. Real Estate Advisory Services in October. Houk Robinson did it the hard way – emulating Joan Crawford‘s role in “Mildred Pierce.” She began as a “hash slinger at the old Shell Cafe and then opened her own, long-gone Zoe’s Cafe on Park Avenuie. Wedding bells will ring some time in October. . . And the Vital Voice is temporarily suspending its print publication due to “undergoing a complete business restructuring and publication redesign.” Stories and date info will be updated on the newspaper’s website, www.thevitalvoice.com.
