It was old home week at the Ritz-Carlton on Sunday, when Chef Matt Birkenmeier of the Ritz-Carlton, Montego Bay, Jamaica met a lot of his old pals and new-to-St. Louis Executive Chef Melissa Lee, the first female Executive Chef in the history of Ritz Carlton. Melissa is “Ch-Irish” an affable and remarkably friendly lady whose dad hails from Hong Kong and her mom from Cork, Ireland. Chef Matt was vacationing in St. Louis before returning to Jamaica. Also at the table basking in the glow of his oldest son was T. J. Birkenmeier a local nuisance. Chef Matt started as a burger flipper for Tommy Bahn at Cousin Hugo’s before embarking on his adventures to the Riverfront Regal (Millenium), Monarch, The American Queen, Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, and the 7200- passenger and crew Disney Dream before dropping anchor in Montego, Bay. Matt’s Mom is Ellen Kahle and he’s a grad of Ladue High, the school of hard knocks and is a chef certified by the CIA. . .Today is sculptor Don Wiegand’s birthday.
